Longer days and warmer weather in the summer months make it a great time to mix up your exercise routines or get active in new ways.
The sunny days just might give you extra motivation to get moving, and with the OK from your doctor — especially if you have any chronic health issues — you should take advantage. This doesn’t mean you have to cut out the gym if you like to regularly exercise there, but you might opt to jog outside sometimes instead of in the gym on a treadmill or add in a weekly tennis lesson.
When you mix it up and incorporate variety into your fitness routine, it helps you have fun and stay motivated, both good things for your health and weight loss goals!
The key is that you keep moving — and start slow if you’re getting back into it after a winter of hibernation — for the benefit of your muscular strength, endurance, cardio respiratory strength and endurance, and flexibility.
“You don’t need to set aside large chunks of time for exercise or create a rigorous plan to reap benefits,” said longtime Medical Weight Loss Clinic employee Jordan Stewart. “If you can’t do an actual workout, go to a gym or attend a structured exercise class, get more active throughout the day in simple ways — by taking the stairs instead of the elevator or parking in a space that is farther away from your destination.”
There are several other ways Jordan recommended to get moving in the summer, many of which can fit into your every life.
Ways to get active outside in the summer include:
• Use a push mower to mow the lawn
• Go for a walk in a nearby park
• Go for a bike ride
• Walk with a friend over the lunch hour
• Volunteer to become a coach or referee
• Join a softball/basketball/volleyball league
• Do some gardening
• Sign up for a fun outdoor obstacle course
• Swim
• Canoe or kayak
• Try a new walking path when you take your dog for a walk
• Hike
• Play tennis
• Try outdoor yoga
These activities are also great ways for you to enjoy the outdoors, and unwind, have fun and spend quality time with your family or friends. Swimming and going on group bike rides are popular options that are easy to do with as many people as want to join in!
Medical Weight Loss Clinic encourages patients to get out and move to support good causes too. There are several upcoming walks and runs that we will be a part of this summer to support the fight against diabetes, heart disease, Crohn’s disease, obesity and more. We invite our patients and their families to join us. Learn more or sign up here.
“It is great outdoor activity and fun for the whole family. The community events are motivating and refreshing,” Jordan said.
